Top 50 Fashion Blogs in the US

Apr 23, 2007 |

Click here to see the updated rankings!

Hi all,

Many of us have seen articles on the most influential fashion blogs in the mainstream media. However, a lot of these articles really didn’t go into any data as to which blog had the most traffic or biggest readership. We feel that the fashion blog phenomenon has grown enough to deserve it’s own set of metrics. So, we have created this list.

The focus of this study is on independent blogs, not corporate blogs or blogs associated with a periodical. Thus we eliminated sites like the ThisNext blog and the fashion blog at Glamour. We also eliminated blogs that were more gossip oriented than fashion oriented. We kept Go Fug Yourself and The Manolo, but eliminated sites like “A Socialite’s Life.

Our Findings:

  • There are a lot of fashion blogs out there. We dug through many sites that we had never heard of.
  • Many blogs are getting choked by widgets and advertising. If you have to wait 30 seconds for a site to load on DSL, that’s not a good thing. Don’t sell out your readers for a few $$$.
  • Many blogs are not set up to maximize search engine traffic, thus a significant source of new readers is not being exploited.
  • We were surprised by the readership and reach of the Handbag blogs. Who knew!

Our Methodology:

We used three basic metrics to determine the blog ranking. Unique visitors (audience), traffic (reach) and links to the site (influence.) This data was compiled from Quantcast, Alexa, and Yahoo and weighted according to what we felt was the most accurate data. We then calculated the overall score and came up with a ranking.

So without further ado, here is the list:

This is the initial version of the list, so if we have made any glaring omissions please let us know. We will update this list monthly, and you can always find it by clicking on the “Top 50 Fashion Blogs” category on the FashionIQ Blog.

Questions you may have:

Why are there blogs from other countries on this list?

This list is the top fashion blogs based on US data, there are several blogs from the UK, Canada and Australia that are read by many people in the US.

Why didn’t you use Technorati for the link information?

Not everyone’s on Technorati, and we felt the Yahoo data was a better indicator. For example, if your blog is mentioned in an AP story or on Oprah, you will have a lot more links, but Technorati would likely not show this.

Can I get the entire list?

Sure, We’ll send you the entire list in exchange for a link back if you are a fashion blogger. Other interested parties may purchase the list for $25.

How can I add my blog?

Just contact us with your blog details. Please note that your blog must not be a corporate blog or associated with a periodical and of course not be a spam blog.

Why is this important?

We think it’s important to have an independent measure of ranking and traffic rather than relying on lists created by the mainstream media. Media metrics based on quantitative data will help the community bring in more advertisers and support.

Thanks, and please comment if you have any feedback.

Thanks for adding me to the list! It was a great idea to put a list together, and I love that you didn’t use technorati. Too many people seem to rest on their technorati-rank-laurels.

      Helen,

No problem, congrats on your ranking! We like Technorati, but we wanted to get out of the blogging world’s echo chamber a bit. I believe Aaron Wall (seobook.com) said that inbound links was the surest way to determine a website’s actual traffic, so we went with Yahoo links.

Fashion IQ’s List of the Top 50 Fashion Blogs…

Fashion IQ has put together a list of the Top 50 Fashion Blogs in the U.S.  It’s quite an impressive list!  Many of them I’m sure we’ve all read before, but there is a new fashion blog that I discovered……

This list is deeply, deeply wrong and I pray that no one pays $25 for this..

a better indicator of links would have been to use a free site like marketleap.com, which would give you the number of links that each search engine (not just yahoo) has for the site.

For example some blogs have a great deal more links in google than yahoo. Also why would you use yahoo as an indicator, when a signficant majority of the searches on the web are done in google. A better idea of true rank would be to look at the google links rather than yahoo.

Also some of the blogs you ranked in the top 10 have page ranks below 5 and ones you didn’t rank had page ranks above 5.

    9. […] Finally a list!read more | digg story « Fun Gemstone Tutorial […]

    10. Admin April 24, 2007 10:13 pm

      Why hello Marketleap!

The issue with using Google links is that not all links are publicized. Yahoo publicizes all links that are found by their webcrawler. Google does not.

On page rank, it really is not relevant for this sort of study. If it were relevant, then style.com and vogue.com would have a much higher pr than 6.

I am happy to discuss the methodology further if you like.

Honored to scrape in at #50! Gotta work on those numbers but after only a year, that’s not bad.

      Hi Fashion IQ!

We’re a new fashion blog, and wanted to get on your radar screen. We’ve just added all these vote for me, digg me, etc. widgets to our blog, so hopefully we’ll get some more international exposure now. We’re linked through the Winston-Salem Journal newspaper online web site, www.journalnow.com, so it might be hard to find us. Any suggestions as to how to become more accessible, let us know!

      Best and thanks,
      Stephanie

    16. Kathleen April 28, 2007 2:59 am

Interesting that you didn’t include google rankings rather than yahoo. Others (self included) think that carries more weight and metrics are transparent (page ranking etc). Your response re: yahoo from below is noted but again, I get very little traffic from there. Regarding Alexa…you have to load their widget for accurate figures so if you don’t (and I don’t), traffic stats are sorely -and I do mean sorely- misrepresented -in the same way that Technorati can skew obversely (some know how to play the technorati game for all it’s worth -and don’t we know it- so kudos that they didn’t game you). Similarly, it’d be interesting were it possible to measure the sites with respect to visitor participation. I’d rank higher than a lot of those who preceded me in the listings but Erin (dressaday) would beat us all to a bloody pulp :).

Thanks for the survey, it looks like it was quite a bit of work! I’m looking forward to checking out a lot of these blogs. thanks!

    19. Matt Wardman April 29, 2007 11:27 pm

      Hi Nicole,

Hope you don’t mind being critiqued.

A couple of problems with your survey:

1 - It is not transparent - you do not publish your data or your weightings.

2 - It is not anything like rigorous.

One example. You use Alexa data.

Alexa data is well-nigh meaningless for any sites with a ranking much below 25,000 or so. To pick 5 at random, the Alexa ranks of numbers 10,20,30 and 50 in the list are: 167111, 58363, 276598, 566812. I can’t quote 40 because you link to Spam site.

The proof? If I install an Alexa toolbar and am the only person visiting a site daily, it will be in the top 50-100,000 in a couple of months.

I’ll let you off with “this is our fun survey, but don’t trust it too much”.

Anyway - thanks for the read.

      Cheers

      Matt

    20. Admin April 29, 2007 11:56 pm

      Hi Matt,

      Thanks for your comment.

      1. I was pretty clear as to the sources of the data. For everyone’s information I weighted Unique Visitors from Quantcast as 30%, Alexa Data at 25%, and external link data as 45%.

      2. I’m not sure what you mean by the second statement. It was an attempt to use public sources of data to come up with a blog ranking. The methodology was clearly stated.

On Alexa, it’s a bit harder to game these days. For example I have the Alexa on IE and I probably load my home page 30 times per day. I’m still at 250K. I agree that the numbers are fairly suspect at lower rankings(hence the lower weighting.) However *all* website ranking services use panel data, thus I’m not sure where you go for sites that are out of the top 25-50k. ComScore is all over the place as well.

You offer criticism, but you don’t really offer any ways to improve the survey. Do you have any suggestions?

      Thanks,
      Chris

If you can put a spin on it, make your analysis of the top 50 different and accurate and you will catch people’s attention, use a new formula that is fair and accurate can often generate extra plaudits and attention, I found one on fashion blogs last week which was done differently where they used a variety of factors to rank. Calling All Caribbean Designers – Canadian Fashion Show to Shine Spotlight on Caribbean Design for the World to See

(Toronto, Ontario) - International fashion marketing company, Caribbean Fashion Canada Inc. (CFC) is seeking talented Caribbean designers to introduce to Canadian fashion buyers and media. Hosted by Jeanne Beker (Host/Segment Producer: “FT-FashionTelevision” & “FashionTelevisionChannel” )

We are partnering with Canadian-Caribbean fashion businesses and Caribbean countries to act as a bridge between the talented Caribbean apparel design sector and important international markets. We believe the Canadian fashion industry is ripe for exposure to the innovative designs and vibrant colours of Caribbean designers. Our strategy is to eventually showcase and market the Caribbean apparel industry to the world.

CFC wants to meet all talented Caribbean fashion designers interested in joining us. We will be traveling across the Caribbean to select emerging designers who have the talent and drive to make a big splash on the world stage. Palais Royale Ballroom, Toronto, Ontario

We know that Caribbean fashion designers attract attention at regional and international events. And we also know that these small and innovative apparel businesses have few resources to market themselves consistently to the world. CFC, with contacts and alliances with fashion industry bodies, fashion events and experts, was formed to fill that marketing gap.

CFC is also the producer of an exciting new fashion show event: SGL Caribbean Fashion Canada Week, a major annual industry event with global buyers and merchandisers from the major chains and independent retailers. Caribbean Fashion Canada Week includes a number of fashion runway shows, professionally produced to exhibit the best Caribbean designers.

We will be carefully vetting and choosing our Caribbean partners, based on the quality of their designs, their marketability and their ability to fulfill orders. See our web site for information about linking with CFC www.caribbeanfashioncanada.com

The fashion and beauty industry is a billion dollar business, one in which the Caribbean apparel sector should share and contribute to. CFC will ensure that happens.

About Caribbean Fashion Canada Inc.: CFC is a marketing organization that provides a forum offering international exposure and promotion especially for Caribbean designers that are interested in finding opportunities in the global market. CFC creates high profile platforms to showcase the work and creativity of established and emerging Caribbean fashion designers, and to promote the diverse fabric of Caribbean fashion both domestically and internationally. CFC has local, regional, national and international alliances, partnerships and relationships with industry bodies, events, and experts. One of our main events is SGL Caribbean Fashion Canada Week, an annual industry event that proactively engages global buyers and merchandisers from the major chains and independent retailers.

This ranking was very helpful, but maybe you can help me further. I am going to start a Blog/E catalog of the Worlds best high end and casual fashion for children. I have not been able to find a whole lot of them online. I am in the fashion biz and I see a need for children’s one stop shop for the best of the best with lots of photos and even interactive contests to get kids involved in creating there own fashion ideas. So if you could refer any other sites that could help or really any advice you may have would be a tremendous help to me.

Thanks again for all your work on the rankings :)
